KNOW YOUR RATING

Do you know that your local Fire Department rating will
affect your homeowner’s insurance premiums?

The NCCRS was formerly known as the Insurance
Service Office rating or ISO.
The new system is administered and maintained by
the North Carolina Office of the state Fire Marshal.
The primary purpose of the NCCRS is a public
protection survey that is used to collect data that is
needed to determine a fire insurance classification.
This classification may be used to determine property
insurance premiums.
The NCCRS is not for property loss, prevention or life
safety purposes (North Carolina Office of State Fire
Marshal)
The NCCRS Fire Department inspections are renewed
every five years.
The inspection creates data that outlines a Fire
Departments capability to provide fire protection to a
community.
This Data is used by most Homeowner’s Insurance
Companies, along with other factors, to determine
what insurance premium a homeowner will pay.

THE North Carolina Response Rating System (NCCRS)

The NCCRS was developed to simplify and improve the former Insurance Service Office (ISO) rating system.
The NCCRS determines a Fire Departments ability to provide fire protection through a series of questions and
inspections. Some of the different things the NCCRS looks at are: equipment, personnel, training, communication
capabilities, documentation, water resources and capabilities and vehicles.
Typically the best ratings are within a 5 mile distance from the Fire Department. The NCCRS allows for a 6 mile district
but the Fire Departments must apply for this standard and must meet minimum standards.

NCCRS Class Ratings

Class 10 – These properties are greater than 5 miles away from the Fire departments and the Fire Department has not
applied for or received a 9S rating. This distance rating applies even if a recognized water source is within 1000ft.
Class 9E – These properties are within 6 road miles away from a Fire Department and over 1000 feet away from a
recognized water source. Insurance premiums may receive a 10% discount.
Class 9S – These properties are within 5 road miles away from a Fire Department and over 1000 feet away from a
recognized water source. Insurance premiums may receive a 10% discount.
Class 8 – These properties are within 5 miles of a Fire Department and within 1000 feet from a recognized water source
that can produce 250 GPM for 2 hours. Insurance premiums may receive a 20% discount.
Class 7 – These properties meet Class 8 requirements but have other departmental scores that are higher. Insurance
premiums may receive a 30% discount.
Class 6 – These properties meet Class 7 requirements but have other departmental scores that are higher. Insurance
premiums may receive a 40% discount.
Class 5-1 – These properties meet all of Class 6 requirements but have higher departmental scores. Insurance
premiums for all Class 5 to Class1 may receive a 40% discount. Businesses may receive a greater discount in these
classes.
